A Voluntary Program to Save Energy and Birds
Every spring, migrating birds on their way to Canada pass through Georgia during nighttime hours when the air is calmer, cooler, and safer from predators. Bright lights confuse birds and thousands collide with structures or become disoriented in beams of light, circling until exhausted.
We can help reduce sky glow by:
- Turning off outdoor lights from 12-6 AM, March 15 – May 31
- Installing outdoor lights that aim down and are shielded
- Choosing “warm” colored bulbs (3,000 Kelvin or lower)
