The Tree Next Door recently published their analysis of the City’s tree loss data through the end of 2023. The data from 2014 to 2023 shows that the loss of healthy trees, both legally permitted and illegally removed, has more than doubled since 2020.
We examined properties with more than 200 trees removals permitted, and we saw that the majority of our tree losses are occurring on just a handful of multi-family and commercial properties. Previously, we have assumed that most tree removals occur on single-family residential lots because these properties account for 77% of our existing tree canopy.
You can go to the Tree Next Door website (treenextdoor.org) to learn more about the more recent tree loss patterns in Atlanta and proposed changes in Zoning ordinances to preserve our tree canopy.
